Necklaces

Necklaces have an interesting history. In 2004 the discovery of a string of mollusk shells in South Africa pushed the date of the first necklace back to 75,000 years ago. Gold was introduced as a necklace material about 2,500 B.C., but it wasn’t until the second century in Rome, that piercing techniques became sophisticated enough to produce gold work that looked like lace, thus the name we still use for neck ornamentation.  Necklaces immediately capture the attention of the viewer. The location of a necklace on the upper chest of both men and women makes it a ready emblem for announcing whatever “tribe” you align yourself with, as well as being an extraordinarily successful way to non-verbally brag about great wealth. In some cultures necklace design was dispensed with all together, it was simply a convenient way to carry the gold coins that were your dowry. The location of a necklace on a woman’s body makes it an extremely sexual object, and it’s interesting that through history necklaces waned in popularity when décolletage was not in fashion.  But I wonder about those much early times. When did humans first put something over their head and hang it around their neck? There is an implied suggestion of strangulation, but was this threat overshadowed by an immediate need to have a place to carry things? If there was that moment of inspired genius, eons before the invention of pockets, how long did it take to turn that completely utilitarian functionality into an object of status, delineation, and wealth? Or were necklaces just “bling” from the get go?

oak trees

If You Need Me Just Whistle
Stock Number: N2020
Size:  approximately .75 inches in diameter (20cm)
Materials: Sterling Silver
Price: $50.
I don't even remember when I first learned how to whistle with the cap of an acorn. Because  the sound is so loud this is a great piece of survival know-how, that is, if you happen to get lost in the woods, and there just happen to be oak trees around! Maybe a better plan is just wear a sterling one on a leather cord around your neck. You might want to give this to someone special and like Lauren Bacall asked Humphrey Bogart, "You know how to whistle, don't you? You just put your lips together - and blow."

yoga jewelry

Penny for Your Thoughts Pendant
Stock Number: N2009
Size: 1 inch in diameter, (25mm)
Materials: Copper, sterling silver and brass.
Price: $25.

During yoga we are reminded to breathe and focus. I will admit there are classes when I have a hard time getting past the bombardment of daily minutia and just being in the moment. When I do manage to find focus and balance the most amazing things happen. These pendents are a token reminder to let your best instincts guide you. Each soldered copper pendant has an inspirational word on the front, with a relevant quote on the back. All pieces are signed. These are strung on a 28 inch leather cord, sterling chains are available at an additional cost

jasper

Jasper Pear Necklace
Stock Number: N2007
Size: 18 inches long , (354mm)
Materials: Sterling silver and jasper
Price: $175.

This is a one-of-a-kind necklace. I can't help buy stones that limit me in this way when they are as beautiful as this one is, with its tiny serene landscape. It reminds me of those hazy distant landscapes that were often behind some of the Madonna paintings by Leonardo DaVinci. The chain attaches with two tiny clasps at the front of the necklace that are most often associated with watch fobs. This addresses one of my pet peeves, lovely necklaces with boring clasps at the back of your neck, as if no one ever sees you from behind.

This flattering necklace lies at the base of the neck, and the free spinning square beads twist to display a constantly changing view of either the PMC exterior or the polymer cane inside. beer caps

Twist and Shout Necklace
Stock Number:
N2018
Size:
20 inches long and 1 inch wide, (510mm x 26mm)
Materials: Beer caps, assorted beads, twine, sterling silver
Price:
$200.

For years friends have brought over interesting microbrews I have never heard of, and the caps are just too pretty to throw away. It had to happen sooner or later, the basket of interesting beer caps was finally overflowing. The first exhibition necklace is a political statement that contains survival gear, and the beer cap beads suggest that our teetotaling president is going to drive us all to drink. Once I got that out of my system, I wanted a series that is just about summer fun. Lightweight and extremely comfortable to wear this is just the accessory for your next backyard party, summer concert, or dining at your favorite sidewalk café.

All these necklaces have PMC elements and some of them have porcelain and terra cotta beads, (made back when I was still a potter!) secret messages, antique glass beads, and bezel set stones. The piece pictured here has hanging elements all the way around, enhancing the back of your neck as well as the front.

Jasper

Poetry Box Necklace

Stock Number: N2013
Size: Pendant 3.5 inches long, necklace 16 inches long.
Materials: Sterling silver, PMC, hand-cut jasper, citrine and black onyx
Price: $600.

This one-of-a-kind necklace is a favorite of mine. I enjoy things that are mysterious and private. The fabricated hollow sterling "box" holds a tiny scroll of paper with a poem inside. The back of the box is heavily patterned, PMC beads give lush weight and texture, and hand-cut jasper evokes imaginary landscapes. The citrine bezel set on the sides of the box catch light in unexpected ways. Stones vary from one piece to the next. Poems are chosen by each individual. The accompanying gift box contains a copy of the poem hidden inside the necklace.

Copper

Navigating Towards the Shores of Happiness Necklace

Stock Number: N2016
Size: 2.75 inches (7 cm) long x 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide x .25 inches (8 mm) deep
Materials: Copper
Price: $100.

I'm not much of a boater, but I realized that the boat as a metaphor is extremely pleasing to me, as is evident by the old boat prints, wooden boat toys and models I have collected over the years. In yoga class we do meditations that remind us to keep happiness and abundance of spirit on the horizon. I have learned over the years that if you steer straight at something, it's hard to miss it.
These copper vessels are hollow construction and completely hand-fabricated. (That's six separate pieces of copper, and nine soldering procedures.) They are heavily patinated and have holes in the front hull to accept the leather cord.

Polymer Clay

Walk in the Park Necklace

Stock Number: N2015
Size: 18 inches long (45cm), center beads 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter
Materials: Silver Precious Metal Clay and polymer clay
Price: $600.

Sometimes a wonderful moment needs to be captured. I often make pieces that are like stop-action photography. A simple phrase can evoke the nuance and expression of an experience. These necklaces, though alike in concept, are all a little different, which is one of the joys and strengths of working with precious metal clay. Each necklace has slightly different beads in the back, colors and shapes in the polymer evolve too. The best part, the little "story" on the nine front beads is unique to each necklace. (This one says "fall on the ground and stare at the sky") The front beads can be arranged to show the polymer side or the precious metal clay side, and the one-of-a-kind toggle clasps are handmade in precious metal clay.

Jasper

Cracked Earth Pendants

Stock Number: N2012
Size: 20 inches (60cm) long.
Price: $175.

Well Rochester is not in the desert, but in August it often feels like it. The days are hot, the nights never really cool down, and watering the garden becomes an exercise in futility. But if you have ever been to the desert, you know the dried, cracked earth has a beauty of its own. These jasper, hand selected in Tucson, remind me of that beauty. Each jasper is bezel set in sterling silver and hangs from an 18 inch patinated sterling silver rolo chain. Each necklace is one-of-a-kind. This is a limited edition.

Handmade bezels

Beachcombing Necklace

Stock Number: N2011
Size: 24 inches (60cm) long
Price: $600.

A walk on the beach is a great way to let my mind wander. When I need to think I have the good fortune of being a mere four miles straight up the road to one of our Great Lakes. The rewards of beach ruminations are many. There is the soothing response of the waves, the feel of sand beneath my feet, and wonderful treasures filling my pockets. The physical testimony to those mental journeys is in these one-of-a-kind necklaces. Beach glass, shells and, sand-polished stones, all bezel set in sterling silver with a hand-made toggle clasp. Each necklace is one of a kind.

orthoceras fossils

Swimming the Sahara Necklace

Stock Number: N2010
Size: Pendant 4 inches (9.5cm) long on an 18 inch (45cm) chain inches.
Price: $175.

This prehistoric squid called orthoceras, swam the waters of the Sahara 350 million years ago. Though they reached lengths of 60 feet (!) I decided on a more manageable length of 3 inches. This breathtaking black and white fossil hangs in a sterling silver bezel from a textured and patinated sterling chain slide, embellished with a 6mm black onyx, also bezel set. The classical sterling chain is 18 inches long, but can be requested in other lengths. This is a limited edition.
